Several runners from the city of Portland took part in the 77th New England cross country championships Saturday in North Scituate, R.I. The Class A champion Cheverus girls’ team came in eighth with 332 points (Champlain Valley Union High School of Vermont was first with 112). Stags senior Emily Durgin had the third best time and was second for scoring purposes, completing the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 28 seconds. Also scoring for Cheverus were senior Fiona Hendry (fifth, 18:40), sophomore Kiera Murray (23rd, 19:27), senior Maddie Woods (146th, 21:24) and senior Lizzie Gwilym (156th, 21:37). The only local boy to compete was Waynflete senior Abshir Horor, who had the 132nd-best time (17:22).
McAuley varsity girls’ basketball coach Billy Goodman and the defending Class A state champion Lions will offer a basketball clinic Sundays Dec. 4, 11 and 18 at the high school. Girls in grades 3-5 go from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Girls in grades 6-8 go from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The first 45 minutes will be devoted to drills and fundamentals. Games will be played the final 45 minutes. The cost is $15 per week or $40 for all three and includes a T-shirt and free admission to a Feb. 3 varsity home game versus Westbrook. Portland Boxing Club open class middleweight Jimmy Smith won a semifinal round bout last weekend and advanced to the finals of the USA Boxing New England championships Nov. 26 at the Stevens Avenue Armory. Smith, of Biddeford, rallied to win his bout with a third round knockout. Open class light welterweight Casey Kramlich, from Auburn, lost a split decision to former champions Nick Delumba, of Cranston, R.I. Other PBC fighters who won on Saturday were novice middleweight Sasha Lamour, of Portland, novice welterweight Jayson Richter, of Portland and novice lightweight John Lopez, of Westbrook. The Western Maine Baseball Umpires Association is holding baseball umpire certification classes.
