Holiday tourneys upcoming

City basketball and hockey teams will take part in holiday tournaments next week. The Portland Expo will host boys’ and girls’ hoops action. On Tuesday, Deering’s boys play Spruce Mountain at 6:30 p.m. and Cheverus meets Yarmouth at 8 p.m. On Dec. 28, Portland plays Susan Wagner of New York at 5:30 p.m. The Bulldogs meet either Greely or Mountain Valley at 8:30 p.m. Play continues Dec. 29 and 30 with pairing to be announced. Waynflete’s boys will compete in the St. Dom’s Classic in Auburn Tuesday.

In girls’ action at the Expo, Portland meets Cape Elizabeth Monday at 11 a.m. Waynflete meets Greely at 12:30 p.m. McAuley will play Winnacunnet (N.H.) at 2 p.m. Waynflete meets Windham at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Portland and Winnacunnet square off at 12:30 p.m. McAuley and Wells play at 2 p.m. Deering isn’t taking part in a holiday tournament, instead playing regular season games Tuesday at home versus South Portland and Friday against visiting Bonny Eagle.

At the Maine High School Hockey Invitational at the Portland Ice Arena, Cheverus meets Tewksbury, Mass., at 2 p.m. Tuesday and Portland faces Newington/Berlin, Conn., at 4 p.m.  Wednesday at 10 a.m., Portland plays Wethersford, Conn. Cheverus faces Kennett, N.H. at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Cheverus girls’ basketball clinic

The Cheverus girls’ varsity basketball team is holding free skill development clinics for girls in grades 3-8 Saturdays Jan. 7, 14 and 21 at Cheverus, 267 Ocean Ave. in Portland. Grades 3-5 go from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Grades 6-8 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants will receive a free pass to be special guests at Cheverus’ home game versus South Portland on Jan. 28. Maine Elite Lacrosse offerings

Maine Elite Lacrosse is offering a range of activities at the new Riverside Athletic Center in Portland. On Sundays, boys’ K-8 Skills and Drills is at 3 p.m., K-6 game time at 4 p.m. and high school games at 5 and 6 p.m. Monday at 5 p.m., girls play a full field 7v7 game. Tuesdays, boys’ high school pickup is at 3 p.m., girls’ K-8 Skills and Drills at 5, Boys’ grades 7-8 games at 6 p.m. and boys’ high school full field games at 7 p.m. Wednesday, boys’ high school pickup is at 3 p.m., women’s collegiate pickup at 8 p.m. Thursdays, boys’ high school pickup is at 3 p.m. and men’s collegiate pickup is at 8 p.m.

Winter running strength program

Waynflete cross country and track coach Brian “Ziggy” Gillespie, a 1996 inductee into the Maine Running Hall of Fame, is hosting a 10-week winter strength program 9 a.m. Sundays beginning Jan. 1 at Cape Elizabeth High School.
