The Cheverus High-populated First Title team captured the state championship Monday afternoon, capping a successful run through the double-elimination state tournament with a 5-4 win over Pastime Club of Lewiston at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach. First Title couldn’t hold a 4-2 lead in the ninth, allowing Pastime to tie the game, but in the bottom half, Drew Ferrick’s sacrifice fly scored Harry Ridge to end it. First Title advances to the regional championships, which will also be held in Old Orchard Beach, beginning Thursday. The American Legion World Series is Aug. 17-21 in Shelby, N.C.
Catherine McAuley High School has named Elyse Tourangeau as its new varsity field hockey coach. Tourangeau will be assisted by Samantha Leach.
Cheverus’ Nick Melville (who scored two goals), Deering’s Brandon Saucier and Anthony Verville and Portland’s Benjamin Day and Ralph Houanche represented the Southern Maine Activities Association boys’ team in last week’s 22nd annual All-Star Invitational Senior soccer tournament, sponsored by Olympia Sports. Deering’s Joel Costigan served as a coach. Waynflete’s Brandon Salway helped coach the Western Maine Conference squad, which won, 4-3. In the girls’ game, Cheverus’ Leann Morrison and Allison Thomas, Deering’s Lindsey Sneider and McAuley’s Olivia Crozier played for the SMAA and Waynflete’s Becky Smith represented the WMC, which was coached by Waynflete’s Todd Dominski. The SMAA won, 3-2, despite a goal by Smith.
Portland Boxing Club lightweight Liz Leddy, the reigning Golden Gloves lightweight (132 pound) champion, was named Most Outstanding Boxer of the Night award after beating New England light welterweight champion Allie Levigne last week.
Harvard Pilgrim Health Care will hold the first annual Harvard Pilgrim 5K Portland Corporate Road Race Thursday, Aug. 16 at 6:15 p.m., at Payson Park. Local companies are encouraged to field teams of employees. Individual runners and walkers are also welcome to participate in the 3.1-mile event. FMI, harvardpilgrim5k.com/Portland.
