WMC sweeps soccer all-star games

The Western Maine Conference senior men’s and women’s soccer teams got the better of their Southern Maine Activities Association counterparts last week at Westbrook High in the 21st annual all-star soccer tournament.

In the men’s game, Waynflete’s Omar Abdille scored a goal to lead the WMC to a 2-1 win. Portland’s Rocky Frenzilli and Deering’s Andy LeFebvre coached the SMAA squad. Other local players participating included Cheverus’ Peter Potthoff, Deering’s Charlie Dupee and Isaac Wipfler and Portland’s Feliks Cobanovic and Abdul Hassan for the SMAA.

The WMC women also won 2-1. Local players taking part included Cheverus’ Kaitlin Doherty, Deering’s Amanda Masse and Aarika Viola, McAuley’s Maura Esten and Waynflete’s Emily Bessette. Both WMC teams now hold a 10-4 advantage over the SMAA with seven ties.

Shay’s Grill wins men’s lax title

Shay’s Grill Pub is the 2011 Maine Elite Lacrosse men’s league champion. Shay’s defeated Siano’s, 12-10, in the championship game, as former Deering High standout Adam Rothbart and former Yarmouth star Rob Highland each had three goals.

Portland announces first day preseason schedule

The first day of the fall sports preseason at Portland High is Monday. Football meets at 8 a.m. Girls’ soccer goes at 10:30 a.m. Boys’ soccer meets at 12:30 p.m. Cross country at 8:30 a.m. Cheerleading at 3:30 p.m. Those teams all meet at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Field hockey goes at 8 a.m. at the Deering Oaks baseball field. Golf has a 9 a.m. meeting in Alumni Hall.

Cheverus announces preseason first day schedule

The first day of preseason activities at Cheverus High School will be Monday. Varsity and JV football practice from 8 to 10:15 a.m. and 3:45 to 6 p.m. Boys’ soccer has double session tryouts from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Girls’ soccer tryouts are from 8 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Field hockey goes from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Boys’ cross-country meets at 6:30 p.m. FMI, 774-6238.

3-on-3 basketball tournament upcoming

The Old Port Hoopla 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held Aug. 20-21 on Union Wharf in Portland. There will be men’s, women’s and high school divisions. FMI, oldporthoopla.com.
