PORTLAND — One southbound lane of the Veterans Memorial Bridge, which connects Portland’s West End and South Portland, will be closed for four days beginning Tuesday Feb. 21.

The right-lane closure will allow construction crews to work on the south abutment approach to a new bridge being built in the same place, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Transportation.

The project is on schedule, officials said, with the new bridge scheduled to open this summer. The existing bridge will be removed by the end of the year.

The lane closure will last from 6 a.m. Tuesday through 3:30 p.m. Friday. The DOT said drivers should expect slow traffic and plan on taking extra time to reach their destinations.
