PORTLAND — In an effort to promote composting as part of the city’s sustainability goals, the Public Services Department is selling home compost bins and other equipment.

Orders for compost bins ($50), kitchen waste pails ($10), rain barrels ($65) and other equipment will be taken in person or by mail by the Department of Public Services, 55 Portland St.

City officials say that composted food scraps and yard waste can be used in place of fertilizer on lawns and gardens. Together with recycling, composting can reduce household refuse by as much as 80 percent, and save families and the city money.

Order forms for the equipment are on the public services website, and will be accepted until April 2.
