PORTLAND — Five artists have been selected to paint city utility boxes.

A city press release Nov. 8 said the artists were selected by a public art panel from a field of 10 applicants. Each will receive a $500 stipend for work expected to begin as weather permits.

Bret Labelle was chosen to paint at Danforth and State streets; Jared Goulette will paint the box on York Street at Harbor View Park; Justin Levesque will paint the box at Danforth and High streets; Tamara Jones will work at the intersection of C and Valley streets, and Michael Lewis will paint the box outside Mercy Hospital at Spring and State streets.

This is the second round of utility box art; five were done two years ago. The  Portland Police Department and the Portland Public Art Committee sponsor the efforts, and have received financial support from NBT Bank and Port Property Management.
