PORTLAND — The state announced this morning that it has selected Northeast Patients Group to open a medical marijuana dispensary in the city.

The affiliate of California-based Berkeley Patients Group was picked to operate four of the eight dispensaries allowed in Maine.

The Portland dispensary, according to the group’s application, is likely to be at either 959 Congress St. (a former Key Bank building at the corner of St. John Street) or 95 Preble St.

The Department of Health and Human Services selected operators from a pool of 27 applicants. Catherine Cobb, director of the division of Licensing and Regulatory Services, said she expects to meet with representatives of the selected dispensary groups soon and that it will take two to four months for dispensaries to be operational.
