PORTLAND — The Portland Public Schools’ Multilingual and Multicultural Center has been awarded four grants totalling more than $25,000 to support its Make It Happen program.

Make It Happen pairs English language learner students in grades eight through 12 with volunteer academic coaches who provide academic and social support

Three of the awards were made by the Maine Community Foundation: a $7,500 Rines/Thompson grant, a $7,500 Frances Hollis Brain grant, and a $7,200 Edward H. Davis grant. The fourth grant was a $3,000 award from the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust.

The Multilingual and Multicultural Center, at 353 Cumberland Ave., oversees the School Department’s English Language Acquisition Program and provides support service for students whose native language is not English.

According to the center’s website, 1,400 students identify as English language learners.
