PORTLAND — Students in city schools will be eating more local foods thanks to a grant from the Department of Agriculture.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, a member of the House Agriculture Committee, announced the $100,000 grant, which will support the district’s farm-to-school programs.

The district plans to use the money to update kitchen equipment, provide more experiential learning opportunities for students around food and hold an annual local food show where the public can view student gardens and projects related to the farm-to-school program.

Portland is one of only two schools in the state to receive this type of grant. School Administrative District 12 in Jackman also received a farm-to-school grant of $44,000 to expand its local food programs.
