PORTLAND — The School Department food service director has won the Outstanding Director of the Year Award for Maine from the School Nutrition Association, a national nonprofit that seeks to improve the quality of school meals.
Ron Adams, who has been the department’s food director for six years, will receive the award July 13 in Boston.
Under Adams’ leadership, the schools have substantially increased the amount of local food served in 16 school cafeterias throughout the city. The department spends 37 percent of its food budget on local food, “with a goal of reaching 50 percent by 2016,” according to a Portland Public Schools press release.
Adams has worked in child nutrition since 1993. He is credentialed as a school nutrition specialist. City schools serve 5,500 meals a day.
