Forum on safe routes
to school upcoming

PORTLAND — A public forum scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 29, will focus on brainstorming ways to make it safer for students to walk or bike to Lyman Moore Middle School and Lyseth Elementary School in Portland.

The two schools are participating in a federally-funded project aimed at reducing traffic congestion during drop-off and pick-up times by encouraging more students to walk or bike to school.

Both Lyman Moore Principal Lee Crocker and Lyseth Principal Lenore Williams will participate in the forum, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the library of Lyman Moore Middle School at 171 Auburn St.

The Portland Safe Routes to School Team is overseeing the project. The team will create a Walk & Bike to School Implementation Plan, that will designate safe walking and biking routes, suggest infrastructure improvements, review current policies, work on safety education and traffic law enforcement, organize student safety patrols, and plan activities where students walk to school under adult supervision.
