Portland student granted scholarship to attend medical school

PORTLAND — Kenneth Chin of Portland has won a $50,000 scholarship to the Maine Medical Center-Tufts University School of Medicine from Southern Maine Coca-Cola.

Chin was born and raised in Portland and later attended Northeastern University in Boston, graduating with a degree in biology. He worked as a research assistant at the Harvard School of Public Health and at the Dyax Corporation. Post-graduation, he managed a lab at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Over the summer he completed his MMC-Tufts program orientation and is now working on his first year of courses and pursuing his Ph.D.

The scholarship was granted by the Coca-Cola Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Coca-Cola Company.

Cheverus student selected for All-New England Concert Band

PORTLAND — Cheverus High School sophomore Ben LaMontagne has been honored with selection to the 2011 All-New England Concert Band and will perform at the festival to be held at Plymouth State University on Nov. 21.  LaMontagne was selected for his skill in playing the bass clarinet.

2 Portland students recognized for high performance

PORTLAND — Two students from Portland High School have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Ellen Jewett has been selected as a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship Program and Jesse Dritz has been named a Commended Student for the program.
