Portland student honored as SMCC Student of the Year

PORTLAND — Victoria Henderson, an electrical engineering student at Southern Maine Community College was selected recently by faculty and staff as the SMCC Student of the Year.

Henderson was chosen] because of her academic success and community involvement. She will be awarded a John H. Lapoint Jr. Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000.

King Middle School student wins poetry contest

PORTLAND — Abdirashid Hassan, a student at King Middle School, recently won second prize in the Sea Dogs Poetry Contest.

Hassan is an eighth-grade student who came to the U.S. two years ago. He submitted his poem about fond summer memories to a panel of professors and was picked from 300 entries. He read his poem at a Sea Dogs game on May 1.

Top academic honors for Portland Public Schools

PORTLAND — The following seniors have been ranked at the top of their classes at Portland’s Public High Schools based on grade point averages.

Casco Bay High School: Noah Lupica, top-ranking student, and Madeline Weatherhead, second-ranked student.

Deering High School: Madelein Ostwald, valedictorian, and Julia Kang, salutatorian.

Portland High School: Ellen Jewett, valedictorian, and Eleni Anderson, salutatorian.
