First-graders are booked at Ocean Elementary

An exhibit of handmade books created by local first-graders will be on display until March 12 at Ocean Avenue Elementary School. The exhibit is the culmination of a four-week program between the school and Side X Side that brings critical thinking, creativity and innovation into the classroom while integrating science and literacy with the arts.

Side x Side is a Portland nonprofit that designs programs with classroom educators and teaching artists to integrate the arts into the K-12 curricula. Through partnerships with the University of Southern Maine, the Portland Public School Department, the Portland Museum of Art, Portland Public Library, Side x Side programs integrate science, technology, literacy and the humanities with the arts to enhance learning. In partnership with USM, Side x Side is partially funded by a four-year U.S. Department of Education AEMDD grant of $1.9 million.
