PHS holds school
walk-a-thon for Haiti

PORTLAND — The Portland High School French Club and International Club are hosting a schoolwide walk-a-thon to raise money for the relief effort in Haiti.

The walk will take place from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the school gym. Students or staff are asked to raise or donate $10 to participate in the walk.

All donations will be given to Konbit Sante.

PHS Debate Team wins
state tournament awards

PORTLAND — Members of the Portland High School Debate Team have earned several awards, including a state championship.

In the Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate Division at the state championship competition on January 30, sophomore Erika Joyce placed first; senior Ian Kuniholm placed third and Shadiyo Hussein-Ali, a junior, earned fifth place.

At an earlier tournament in January, senior Simon Thompson won second place and junior Abby Hudson took third place in the Junior Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate Division. Erika Joyce placed first in the Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

Cheverus students named
to National Honor Society

PORTLAND — Cheverus High School recently inducted 51 students into the National Honor Society in recognition of students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service and character.
