Local seniors named to U.S. Senate Youth Program

Deering High School senior Zachary Duperry and Catherine McAuley High School senior Carolyn Liziewski will serve as state delegates to the 52nd annual United States Senate Youth Program to be held March 8-15 in Washington, D.C. The selections were announced by Sens. Susan M. Collins, R-Maine, and independent Angus S. King Jr. Duperry serves as president of his class and the Key Club and co-president of the Outdoors Club. In addition, he plays varsity soccer and volunteers as a math tutor. Liziewski serves on the student body executive board, is captain of the mock trial team and math team, and is the business editor for the yearbook. She has served as a U.S. Senate Page through Collins’s office. While in Washington, D.C., the student delegates will attend meetings and briefings with Senators and Congressional staff, President Barack Obama, a justice of the Supreme Court, leaders of cabinet agencies, an ambassador to the United States and top members of the national media. The students will also tour many of the national monuments and several museums and they will stay at the historic Mayflower Hotel.

Portland High student wins state writing award

Francesca Butterfield, a junior at Portland High School, won first place in Maine in the Classical Association of New England Writing Contest. Her essay, “Eros’s Decision,” will represent Maine in the New England competition.
