Portland students make dean’s list

The following students have made dean’s list at their respective college or university.

Students named National Merit finalists

Seven high school students in the Portland Public Schools have been named 2014 National Merit Finalists. They are among about 15,000 ?nalists nationwide who will compete for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships. The finalists from Deering High School are: Cleo Barker, Zachary Duperry and Jordan Roche. The Portland High School finalists are: Samuel Freedman, Evan Peaco and Jeremy Ravenelle. Casco Bay High School student Ava Koenigsberg is also a finalist. To become finalists, students must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that con?rm their performance on the qualifying test.

Portland junior wins writing competition

Portland High School junior Francesca Butterfield won this year’s Classical Association of New England Writing Contest. Butterfield will read her essay, “Eros’s Decision,” at the CANE annual banquet, held at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, N.H., March 7. She advanced to the New England competition by winning first place in Maine.
