Portland Rossini Club hosts competition

The Portland Rossini Club announced the 2014 Portland Rossini Club Scholarship Competitions, open to Maine residents, ages 17 to 25, who are registered as Fall 2014 music majors at an accredited music school, college or university. Previous first place winners of the scholarships may not apply. Three scholarships of $1,200 each will be available. Applicants must perform at least two compositions from memory, 15 minutes total, representing two different periods such as Baroque, Classical, Romantic and/or 20th or 21st century. Competitions will take place June 7 at 1 p.m, at St. Luke’s Cathedral, 143 State St., Portland. The application packet must be postmarked no later than May 17. Deering students’ artwork on MLTI screensavers

Artwork by two Deering High School students will be among the screensavers that appear on Maine Learning Technology Initiative devices for the 2014-15 school year. Sophomores Dominick Bernard and Julie McGarvey had their artwork chosen from among more than 250 submissions. Bernard’s piece is titled “Eye in Triangle” and McGarvey’s piece is “Henna on the Hand.” A three-judge panel selected 22 winning pieces from the submitted artwork. Those pieces will have an audience of more than 70,000 students and teachers using MLTI devices. The student artists are invited to attend the 2014 MLTI Student Conference free of charge.

Students recognized in writing competition

Lyman Moore Middle School seventh graders Taryn Zima and Lauren Paradise were recognized in the Scholastic Writing Awards of Maine awards ceremony at the University of Southern Maine on March 14. Zima received Gold Key recognition for her short story, “Chasing the Moon.” Paradise received Silver Key recognition for her short story, “Dark and Desperate Days.” The Scholastic Writing Awards of Maine encourage student writers in grades seven through 12 to submit work in a variety of genres. The Betterment Fund and the Southern Maine Writing Project sponsor the competition.
