Principals’ Awards recipients named

Three students in the Portland Public Schools – Shaina Lam of Deering High School, Nadia Umwali of Casco Bay High School and Charles “Chip” Weber of Portland High School – have been selected to receive 2013 Principal’s Awards.

The awards, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, are given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. Lam, Umwali, Weber and their principals will attend an honors luncheon in Bangor on April 6.

The honors luncheon recognizes outstanding students from across Maine with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five, $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler, former Maine principals and executive directors of the association.

PATHS students win scholarships

Serena Cobleigh and Billy McIntyre, students in Portland Arts and Technology High School’s Recreational/Marine Repair program won first prize in the marine troubleshooting contest at the Maine Boatbuilders Show in Portland on March 16. Each received $1,000 scholarship awards which can be used at any Universal Technical Institute campus.

Another PATHS student, Jack Leman, teamed up with a Rockland student to
take third place. PATHS students Camden Hopkins and Read Wilson won fourth place.

Now in its second year, the contest is open to high school students in the four small engine/marine programs throughout Maine. UTI and Portland Yacht Services sponsored the contest along with the teachers of those programs.
