Portland’s Memorial Day parade makes it way down Congress Street on Monday to a ceremony in Monument Square. Speakers, including Mayor Michael Brennan and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, said today’s veterans face greater obstacles than ever before upon their return from active duty, with a large number of homeless veterans in Portland and nearly half of returning veterans in need of disability services.

Curtis Ballantine, commander of the American Legion Harold T. Andrews Post 17 in Portland, salutes a wreath laid in Monument Square on Monday in remembrance of the sacrifices of America’s military veterans.

Hundreds of people turned out for the Memorial Day parade on Congress Street.
