PORTLAND — In response to record-setting outbreaks of influenza, the city is holding a free clinic to vaccinate residents against the disease on Friday, Jan. 18, from 10 a.m-2 p.m. at City Hall.

Free vaccinations are also available weekdays at the city’s Public Health Division Clinic, 103 India St.

The number of flu cases in Maine is “significantly higher” this winter than during 2011-2012, with 65 outbreaks reported as of Jan 8., according to the state’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention. A Maine child also died last month due to the disease.

To prevent the spread of flu, the state has recommended that all adults and children over the age of 6 months be vaccinated. In addition, people should wash their hands frequently, cover their coughs and stay home when sick, according to the state.
