PORTLAND — Members of the Police Department are scheduled to discuss public safety issues Thursday with representatives of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
Police Lt. Janine Roberts said the meeting will be the second in recent months and part of a broader community outreach initiative by the department.
Roberts said concerns raised by the GLBT community include being the targets of hate crimes, as well as fears about reporting crimes and distrust of police.
“We’re working on (trust and relationships) by establishing these meetings and continuing to work in those communities,” Roberts said.
The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in Room 213 of the Abromson Community Education Center at the University of Southern Maine, 88 Bedford St.
