PORTLAND — A Riverton man who left his home Tuesday morning was found dead in nearby woods Wednesday afternoon.

Robert Smith, 50, of Luke Street, was found following a search by canine teams from city police and the Maine Warden Service, city Police Lt. Robert Martin said. His body was recovered around 5:30 p.m. The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is examining the cause and manner of Smith’s death.

Smith was last seen around 10 a.m. by a neighbor who reported seeing him walk into the woods at the end of Luke Street during Tuesday’s nor’easter. Smith’s wallet and cell phone were left at his home, Martin said.

Smith was suffering from depression and may have been drinking at the time of his disappearance, Martin said.
