PORTLAND — Police said they have stepped up patrols around Back Cove after a 30-year-old woman was sexually assaulted Monday morning in her car, parked at the Preble Street public lot.

The woman was attacked around 10:20 a.m. when she returned to her car after jogging around Back Cove. The attacker was in the passenger seat, and she fought him as he assaulted her, Assistant Chief Vern Malloch said Tuesday. She eventually sounded the car horn, and the man fled on foot.

The attacker was described as white, about 50, heavy-set, balding and with poor hygiene. He may have tattoos on both forearms.

Malloch said several other people in the parking lot may have witnessed the attack. Anyone with information, or who saw a man enter or exit the passenger side of a small red car, was asked to contact police at 874-8575.
