PORTLAND — A 57-year-old man faces two criminal charges after allegedly demanding sex from a woman while he posed as a police officer.

Gary Mariner, who police said is a Lyman resident, but is listed as living at 28 Elm St. in Sanford on Cumberland County Jail intake logs, was arrested Oct. 1, according to an Oct. 2 press release.

Mariner is charged with gross sexual assault and impersonating a public servant after he allegedly picked up a woman who told police she had been engaging in prostitution.

The victim told police Mariner displayed a badge and handgun and threatened to arrest her unless she performed a sex act. The date of the alleged incident was not made public, but police said the investigation began Sept. 15. The woman was released after the incident.

Mariner is being held on $100,000 bail at Cumberland County Jail. There is no record he has ever been a police officer in Maine, according to the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro.
