PORTLAND — Police are investigating two robberies in the last week where a gun-wielding man took purses from women.

Assistant Police Chief Vern Malloch on Thursday said the latest robbery was reported Wednesday around 11:40 p.m. in West End on Clark Street.

A 25-year-old woman was approached by “a black male wearing all black clothing with a black jacket and scarf,” who showed a gun and took her purse. The suspect was described as about 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a slight build.

Malloch said the first robbery was reported around 10 p.m. Feb. 6 on Congress Street near Lincoln Park. Malloch said two women were approached by “a male, possibly mixed race or having a dark complexion,” who grabbed a purse from a 56-year-old woman from Falmouth.

The victim struggled with the suspect until she realized he was armed. Described as between 5 feet 7 inches and 6 feet tall, with a “medium build with scruffy facial hair,” the suspect was last seen getting into an older four-door sedan, possibly a Mercedes-Benz.

Malloch said anyone with information about the robberies should contact police at 874-8584. Anonymous tips can also be texted to police with the keyword “GOTCHA” plus a message to 274637 (CRIMES).
