PORTLAND — The Police Department is offering a basic self-defense class for women beginning Feb. 2.

The Rape Aggression Defense training is open to women 13 and older who live in greater Portland and is designed to teach them how to avoid and escape dangerous situations.

Participants will attend four classes and a final “scenario” day, where they will put what they learn into action. Classes are held at the Police Department on Middle Street and are taught by officers.

Classes run Feb. 2, 4, 9 and 11 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Feb. 13 from 8 a.m. to noon.

To sign up, e-mail Portland RAD at ppdrad@portlandmaine.gov, or call 874-8643. A donation of $25 is suggested and all proceeds go to the Amy St. Laurent Fund, which sponsors RAD courses.
