PORTLAND — Police are investigating the death of a 42-year-old city resident who fell into Portland harbor Wednesday night.

Lt. James Sweatt on Thursday said Jonathan Knights, whose address was not released, fell into the water somewhere between 58 Fore St. and Cutter Street.

Police were called at 11:20 p.m., but were unable to find Knights in the water. His body was discovered by firefighters around 12:15 a.m. near Portland Yacht Services, Sweatt said.

Witnesses told police Knights fell off a seawall into about 10 or 15 feet of water. They spoke with him while he was in the water, trying to get him to a spot where they could help him. When they lost sight of him, they called 911, Sweatt said.

Knights’ body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for examination. Sweatt called the death an apparent drowning, but said the cause of death has not been determined.
