Cindy Packard, center, pins a new badge onto the shirt of her husband, Vern Malloch, who was sworn in as Portland’s new assistant police chief June 1 in a packed ceremony at police headquarters. Malloch, a 27-year veteran of the department, is one of six officers who received promotions on Friday.

Sgts. Jeffrey Calloway, left, and David Mulry, Lt. Cliff Strout, Cmdr. Gary Rogers, Assistant Chief Vern Malloch, and Lt. Robert Dougherty were moved up in rank Friday, June 1, at the Portland Police Department.
