PORTLAND — Police made four arrests Sunday night during an undercover operation to combat prostitution in the city’s Parkside neighborhood, Assistant Chief Vern Malloch said Monday.

Charged with engaging a prostitute were Robert S. Flagg, 61, of Westbrook; Jose O. Menjiva, 29, of Portland; Christopher C. Pierce, 32, of Naples; and Rumen Shopov, 55, of Portland. Each man was arrested after allegedly offering an undercover police officer money for sex, according to Malloch.

The arrests of Flagg, Menjiva and Shopov all took place within a 20-minute period on two blocks of Weymouth Street, between Congress Street and Park Avenue. Pierce was arrested about an hour later on Deering Place.

Police arrested two men on several charges, including soliciting prostitution, in the same neighborhood on June 21. At that time, City Hall spokeswoman Nicole Clegg said the undercover operation was in response to complaints from residents who have said men have been following them seeking sex.
