PORTLAND — Brian Petrovek, owner and chief executive officer of the Portland Pirates hockey team, pleaded guilty in court March 22 to a charge of drunken driving and was sentenced to perform community service in lieu of jail time.

Petrovek, a 58-year-old Yarmouth resident, was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol on Dec. 5, 2012.

He was charged after his Jeep Wrangler crashed around 1:15 a.m. and became stuck on a concrete median at Spring and Center streets in Portland, near the Pirates’ home at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Petrovek was reportedly trying to free the vehicle and revving the engine when police were called.

Police said his blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit at the time. Petrovek was driving alone, and no other vehicles were involved.

As part of a plea agreement, Petrovek will take part in a 72-hour program beginning May 24 that includes community service and driver education. His driver’s license was suspended for 90 days, and he was also sentenced to pay a fine of $750.

If he fails to complete the out-of-jail program, he will serve the 72 hours in jail.

Petrovek has been owner and CEO of the Pirates since 2000. The team is a minor-league affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Phoenix Coyotes.
