PORTLAND — The 75th anniversary of the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor will be observed at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Fort Allen Park.

Sponsored by the Amvets Charles Loring Post No. 25, the ceremony will take place at the USS Portland mast, where a wreath will be placed.

The Dec. 7, 1941, attack on the U.S. Navy fleet and military bases at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii brought America into World War II.

The USS Portland, a cruiser, served extensively in the Pacific Ocean during World War II, including the battles at Guadalcanal, Midway, and Leyte Gulf. The ship was damaged by torpedo fire at Guadalcanal, and returned to action before it was decommissioned in 1946.
