PORTLAND — Police said an officer was punched in the face early Saturday morning while trying to break up a fight in the Old Port.

Officer Gayle Petty was on Wharf Street around 1 a.m. Aug. 8 when she and other officers saw a large crowd gathering outside the Oasis nightclub, according to Lt. Tony Ward.

Two men were fighting, Ward said, and bouncers from the Oasis were trying to break them up. Officers joined in and tried to separate the men. As Petty grabbed one of them, he turned around and allegedly punched her in the face, Ward said. Petty then took the man down and while doing so two people from the crowd tried to pull her off of the man.

Meanwhile, other officers were dealing with the other man involved in the fight. “Kudos to the Oasis doorman, who got between the crowd and the fight,” Ward said.

Officers finally subdued both men.

Joseph Lanham, 23, of Casco, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and failure to submit to arrest. Ermino Magno, 22, of Portland, was arrested on charges of assault on an officer, disorderly conduct and refusal to submit to arrest.

The two people who allegedly tried to pull Petty off Magno could not be identified, Ward said.
