PORTLAND — A Cumberland Avenue man was charged Tuesday with terrorizing for allegedly leaving a suspicious package at 100 Middle St. on Monday.

Police Lt. James Sweatt said George A. Dimauro, 49, was arrested at his residence at 409 Cumberland Ave. around 6 p.m. and charged with Class C terrorizing, which carries a maximum five-year prison sentence and $5,000 fine.

Dimauro was scheduled to appear in the Cumberland County Criminal Docket in Portland on Wednesday.

Sweatt said the investigation continues on the incident, where a package was discovered in the lobby of 100 Middle St. around 9 a.m. Monday. The building was evacuated and Middle Street closed between Pearl and Middle streets for two hours as the police Hazardous Devices Unit and a K-9 searched the package and area.

Assistant Police Chief Vern Malloch said Monday the package was deemed safe, but police have not commented on its contents or any possible motive for the alleged incident.
