PORTLAND — Police arrested Michael Irving, 45, on Monday in connection with a suspected arson at his Freeman Street home.
Police and firefighters arrived at Irving’s residence at 9 Freeman St. at approximately 3 p.m. Monday after receiving reports that the building was on fire.
When they arrived, according to a city press release, officers found heavy smoke coming from the duplex. Irving told police they were not needed, but was escorted from the home when firefighters arrived to put out the fire.
The other unit of the duplex is occupied, but no one was home at the time of the fire. The building sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
A preliminary investigation into the cause of the fire found that it was suspicious, with a number of fire locations in the apartment and evidence of accelerant use. Irving was interviewed by investigators and arrested at 7 p.m. Monday.
Bail for Irving was set at $50,000.
