PORTLAND — Question 1, which would have set a $15 per hour minimum wage in the city by July 1, 2019, was defeated Tuesday 10,992 to 7,922.

The ordinance would have required employers with 500 or more employees to pay the $15 wage by July 1, 2017

The citywide minimum wage of $10.10 per hour approved by the City Council will take effect Jan. 1, 2016.
