PORTLAND — The city has hired a consulting company from Florida to help find a new city manager.

Colin Baenziger & Associates was selected last week by the City Council to assist in the process of hiring a replacement for Joe Gray, who retired Feb. 11 after 10 years as city manager.

Baenziger traveled to Portland this week to meet with city councilors and get a feel for the city. Mayor Nick Mavodones said he expected the consultant to spend time with individual councilors to discuss their expectations.

The city will pay Baenziger $21,500 from the city manager contingency fund for his services. He will help the city advertise for the position, review resumes and interview candidates.

According to his website, Baenziger has assisted dozens of Florida towns with executive searches, along with municipalities in Arizona, Georgia, Utah and Washington.

The city hopes to have a new manager in office by August. Assistant City Manager Pat Finnigan is filling in on an interim basis.
