PORTLAND — Citing strengthened local ties and $1 million in sales of local food products, the Portland Food Co-op celebrated the first anniversary of its store at 290 Congress St. on Nov. 19.
General Manager John Crane called the first year a success, indicated by expanded hours, more than 1,000 new co-op members, additional store staff, and a $2 million impact on the state economy.
Crane was joined at a celebration by local farmers and business owners who have benefited from co-op purchases.
The co-op now has more than 3,450 members, and the store is also open to the general public.
