PORTLAND — City firefighters and police rescued a man who fell into the Fore River behind Becky’s Diner late Tuesday night.

Fire Capt. John Brennan said the unidentified man was taken to an area hospital for treatment for exposure after emergency crews responded around 11 p.m. Feb. 12.

Brennan said the man fell into the water after trying to get to a fishing vessel from Hobson’s Wharf. The man was under the pier when rescuers arrived.

Members of Rescue Company 1 dove into the water and were able to pull the man to the pier using ground ladders provided by firemen on the pier, Brennan said.

Weather conditions were cold and snowy at the scene, and Brennan said a companion of the man, who had tried to help him, was treated for exposure at the scene.
