PORTLAND — Up to 75 percent of city expenses related to cleanup from the Jan. 26-28 winter storms may be reimbursed by the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The aid to Cumberland, York and Androscoggin counties was announced March 13 by Gov. Paul LePage after a disaster declaration by President Barack Obama. According to a press release, a FEMA assessment in the counties identified $2.5 million in eligible snow removal and repair expenses.
City spokeswoman Jessica Grondin on March 13 said it would be two weeks before Portland officials know how much aid is available, adding that the city has spent $700,000 more than the $1.1 million allocated for snow removal this year.
