PORTLAND — Immigration and housing will be discussed at two City Council committee meetings next week.

On Tuesday, March 22, the Economic Development Committee, with Councilor David Brenerman as chairman, will host a 5 p.m. hearing in the State of Maine Room at City Hall for comments on establishing a city Office of New Americans.

The committee has invited Dan Wallace, director of State and Local Initiatives at the Partnership for a New American Economy in New York City, to speak before accepting public comment. A direction and focus for the new office will likely be discussed.

On Wednesday, March 23, the council Housing Committee, led by Councilor Jill Duson, will host a 5:30 p.m. regional meeting at the University of Southern Maine in Rooms 214 and 215 of the Abromson Center, 88 Bedford St. Public comment will be heard at the meeting.
