PORTLAND — Jessica Shumaker Grondin, a Bangor native with experience as a media specialist for former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, will start next month as the city of Portland’s new communications director.

Grondin replaces Nicole Clegg, who left the city’s employment in October 2013 to take a job with Planned Parenthood of Northern New England.

Grondin, who will report directly to City Manager Mark Rees, earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications with a minor in political science from Regis College in Weston, Mass.

She will join the city after working as marketing manager for the Pierce Atwood law firm in Portland.

Prior to her employment at Pierce Atwood, she worked as director of media and public relations for Boston’s Department of Neighborhood Development, and before that, as deputy director for media and public relations for the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

“I believe that Jessica’s public sector knowledge and commitment to customer service, as well as her proficiency in social media applications and website content management will make her a great asset to the city of Portland team,” Rees said Friday in a release. “We are very excited to have her come on board.”

Grondin who will begin work for the city on March 5, will earn a starting salary of $68,000.
