PORTLAND — A Portland author has picked up three more awards, including a prestigious Newbury honor, for his nonfiction book about a young girl’s struggle for civil rights.
In an annoucement at the Boston Convention Center, the Young Adult Library Service Assocation cited Phillip Hoose for “Claudette Colvin: Twice Towards Justice,” the story of a 15-year-old girl who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white woman in 1955 – nine months before Rosa Parks’ celebrated act.
Hoose received Honors in the John Newbury, Robert Sibert and YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Awards on Monday, Jan. 18, which coincidentally was Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Hoose won a National Book Award two months ago.
