CUMBERLAND — Gun owners can turn in working or broken firearms or unwanted ammunition at three area police departments and a Maine State Police barracks on Saturday, Feb. 23.

The Cumberland, Falmouth and Yarmouth departments will host local events, along with Maine State Police Barracks Troop B in Gray, which will accept items from residents of any Cumberland County community.

Officers will provide free firearms safety education and advice about security and safe storage of firearms in homes. They will also offer instruction on safe ownership and firearms-handling practices.

Proceeds from firearms donated at the Safe Communities Maine event that can reused or resold will go toward the Maine Special Olympics.
