SCARBOROUGH — Police said charges are unlikely after the Nov. 14 shooting of a Portland woman at 38 Running Hill Road.

Carol Dorney, 47, whose address was not disclosed, was accidentally shot once in the mouth around 9:45 p.m. by a man who lives at the home, Scarborough Police Sgt. Rick Rouse said Monday. Rouse declined to identify the man.

The shooting happened in the driveway of the home, listed on Scarborough tax records as owned by Harold and Riva Elliott. Rouse said a resident heard two men arguing about a pickup truck parked at the home, and that one of the men threatened to kill the other.

Rouse said the resident went outside carrying a .22 handgun and accidentally fired it, possibly as he was trying to load it, and struck Dorney.

She was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with mouth and throat wounds. A hospital spokesman Monday said she remained in critical condition.

Although police haven’t filed charges, the incident report has been referred to the Cumberland County district attorney’s office for review, Rouse said.
