SCARBOROUGH — The victim struck Sunday by a southbound Amtrak Downeaster is 36-year-old Charles Hope, whose last known address is Lowell, Mass., said Scarborough Police Sgt. Rick Rouse.

Hope, who police believe may have traveled north on a freight train that was parked at a siding where he was hit, was seen running near the tracks by the engineer before he attempted to cross the tracks.

Hope was taken to Maine Medical Center with life threatening injuries after the 8:15 a.m. incident. A hospital spokeswoman was unable to provide updated information on his condition.

Hope was struck by Downeaster #602, a train with two locomotives and five coaches. The train was going between 50 and 70 mph, Rouse estimated, and did not come to a full stop until it was more than 1,200 feet from the site of the collision.

Rouse said some of Hope’s personal belongings were found in an empty box car of the parked freight train. A conductor told police Hope may have been with three or four other companions, but none were found after a K-9 search of the area north of the Black Point Road overpass and parallel to Highland Avenue, near the former Cook Concrete processing plant.

The train left Brunswick at 7:05 a.m. Sunday morning and passed through Portland at 8 a.m. Service was delayed about 90 minutes after the accident.
