Tennis and track have already created some postseason buzz and baseball, softball and lacrosse are about to join in the fun.

Here’s a glimpse:

Tennis

Two local tennis players reached the finals of the state singles tournament Monday.

Brunswick’s Maisie Silverman, who won the girls’ title in 2012, almost took home another, but dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 heartbreaker in nearly three hours to Falmouth’s Olivia Leavitt, who repeated as champion.

“Olivia played unreal. You could tell that she really wanted it,” Silverman said. “It was such a battle. Making it this far every year is a great accomplishment. So many people have been here to support me. It’s been incredible, a great experience.”

Mt. Ararat’s Nick Mathieu also got within a victory of a championship but was dispatched by Falmouth’s Brendan McCarthy in straight sets, 1-6, 2-6.

Brunswick’s girls’ team is seeking another Class A title. The Dragons earned the top seed in Eastern A after a 12-0 regular season and hosted eighth-ranked Mt. Blue in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Mt. Ararat earned the third seed after a 9-3 season and opened at home against Bangor in the quarterfinals Tuesday. In Western B, Morse finished seventh at 6-6 and played host to No. 10 Gardiner in a preliminary round match Tuesday.

On the boys’ side, Brunswick wound up second after an 11-1 season and opened with a quarterfinal round match versus visiting No. 7 Lewiston Thursday. Mt. Ararat earned the No. 5 seed after posting a 7-5 record. The Eagles visited No. 4 Mt. Blue in Tuesday’s quarterfinals. Morse finished second in Western B after a 9-3 season and hosted No. 7 Maranacook in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Looking ahead, the team semifinals are Saturday, with the higher seeds hosting. The regional finals are Tuesday at Colby College in Waterville. The state finals are Saturday, June 14, at Bates College in Lewiston.

Track

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference held its championship meet last weekend.

Brunswick’s girls were second in Class A, while the boys came in fourth. Mt. Ararat’s boys were sixth and the girls finished eighth. In Class B, Morse’s boys were seventh and the girls came in ninth.

Brunswick and Mt. Ararat will take part in the Class A state meet Saturday in Windham. Morse travels to Brewer to compete in the Class B meet.

Baseball

Morse’s baseball team finished the regular season 10-6 after beating Gardiner (4-2) and losing to Oceanside (10-8), Erskine (3-2) and Lincoln (2-1) in recent days. The Shipbuilders are awaiting their playoff seed and foe.

In Eastern A, Brunswick was seventh at 8-7 entering its finale at Oxford Hills Tuesday. The Dragons were coming off wins over Mt. Ararat (4-0) and Mt. Blue (1-0) and a loss to Bangor (4-0).

Mt. Ararat finished 2-14 and 13th in Eastern A (only nine teams make the playoffs) after closing with losses to Brunswick (4-0), Mt. Blue (11-1), Lewiston (5-4) and Oxford Hills (10-0).

The baseball playoffs begin Tuesday with the preliminary round.

Softball

On the softball side, it appears local teams will be shut out of the postseason.

Morse finished 3-13 and 13th in Western B (only 10 teams qualified) after losses to Oceanside (15-3), Erskine (5-4), Gardiner (10-0) and Lincoln (4-1).

In Eastern A, Mt. Ararat was 4-11 and 11th (only nine teams make the cut) entering its finale at Mt. Blue. The Eagles were coming off a 14-2 win over Brunswick and losses to Lewiston (8-4) and Oxford Hills (6-2).

The Dragons were 0-15 and 13th entering its finale at Oxford Hills Tuesday. Brunswick was coming off losses to Mt. Ararat (14-2), Mt. Blue (6-4) and Bangor (16-1).

The softball playoffs begin Tuesday with the preliminary round.

Boys’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team capped a strong 10-2 season after pounding rival Mt. Ararat (14-5) and Morse (21-5). The Dragons will be the top seed for the Eastern A playoffs.

Mt. Ararat was fourth in Eastern A with a 7-4 record entering its finale at Gardiner Tuesday.

In Eastern B, Morse finished 9-3 after beating Oak Hill (8-4) and losing to Brunswick (21-5). The Shipbuilders were second in the Heals at press time.

The lacrosse playoffs begin with the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Morse was 9-2 and third behind Yarmouth and Freeport in the Eastern B Heals after beating Gardiner (11-10) and Oceanside (16-5) and falling at Bonny Eagle (11-10). The Shipbuilders closed at Lincoln Wednesday.

In Eastern A, Mt. Ararat was seventh at 5-6 entering its finale at Edward Little Wednesday. The Eagles were coming off a 9-8 home win over rival Brunswick and an 11-6 home loss to Cony.

Brunswick was clinging to the eighth and final Eastern A playoff spot at press time after finishing 5-7. The Dragons closed by beating Oxford Hills (12-7) and losing to Mt. Ararat (9-8), Lewiston (7-4) and at powerhouse Yarmouth (14-2).

The lacrosse playoffs begin with the quarterfinals Wednesday.
