PORTLAND — A Planning Board recommendation on designation of a portion of the Portland Co. property at 58 Fore St. as a historic district will not be made until Oct. 27.

A public hearing preceding the board recommendation was scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8, but developers CPB2 asked for a postponement, according to spokeswoman Angie Helton.

Helton said the postponement was needed to allow the developers time to study new information from the city Historic Preservation Board, which has recommended placing existing buildings at the 10-acre site into a protection zone that would give the Planning and Historic Protection boards oversight on development plans. The recommendation is subject to a City Council vote.

The 10-acre site was once home to manufacturing operations for the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad. Some structures date to the late 1840s.
