BRUNSWICK — Phyllis Alley Snell, 91, died Jan. 28, at a local hospital.

She was born Sept. 2, 1922, the daughter of Gladys Raymond Alley and Harold Alley. She grew up in Vinalhaven and South Bristol and graduated from Vinalhaven High School in 1939. Snell went on to Farmington Normal School and received her degree in education in 1942. On Sept. 2, 1942, she married Russell H. Snell. They raised two sons, Wayne and Dean. She taught school for 25 years between Woolwich Central School and West Bath Elementary School. She continued to further her education during her teaching career, receiving her bachelor’s from Farmington State Teachers College and then her master’s from Gorham State College. She was a member of the Maine State Teachers Association and the National Education Association.

Snell enjoyed being with her family and spending time at their cottage on Moosehead Lake. She and Russell loved to go dancing and especially loved the polka. She was a great cook and liked to knit and crochet.

She was predeceased in July 2003 by her beloved husband of 61 years, Russell Snell; and her youngest son, Dean Snell in September 2009.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Snell and wife Shan, of Greenville; daughter-in-law, Sharon Snell, of Brunswick; nine grandchildren, Kerri Snell-Post, Scott Snell, Tanya Goddard, Dean Snell Jr., Amy Helie, Jonathan Snell, Shana Cirulli, Nicholas Snell and Meghan Hartley; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held Feb. 3 at Daigle Funeral Home, Bath. A celebration of her life was held at the Funeral Home.
